Disclaimer : All acne is not bad and not all acne is preventable. As a young person, acne can be caused by hormones and cannot be fixed by changing up your skin care routine a little bit. Do not feel upset because you have acne, know you look great no matter what bacteria cultures decide to inhabit your face :).
Makeup heavy shows are maybe an oily teens worst nightmare. Slathering grease paint on your face and arms makes you feel like buttering the turkey before thanksgiving, so as a high school actor, skin care is essential.
As someone with problematic skin, I was there this past show season - battling breakouts and, at the worst point, dealing with cystic acne and painful black heads. However, through trial and error, you, my dear reader, do not have to suffer the same fate I had to.
One of the most important aspects to clear skin is preparing your skin BEFORE you even put any makeup on. This means, making sure your skin is A. Clean and B. dry. Putting makeup over a wet base makes it cement to your pores and makes cleaning it all off very difficult.
After that, you want to apply a primer to create a layer between your skin and the makeup. The one that I use and recommend is 'Wet n' Wild Photo Focus Face Primer'. I use the version that gives your face a matte finish; to avoid looking shiny under the stage lights. This primer is considerably cheap for the amount of product that you get, and it is cruelty free.
So, you have prepped your face, applied your makeup, rocked your show, and have arrived back in your dressing location. The next piece of information is detrimental... IMMEDIATELY TAKE YOUR MAKEUP OFF. Leaving it on, especially if your show is makeup heavy, is honestly a very poor decision to be making. You should minimize the amount of time you have to spend in so much makeup. My preferred makeup remover method is Equate Makeup Removing Wipes . They really do the job - I used them to get my white grease paint off my face during the 'Addams Family' and it worked every single time without me having to relentlessly scrub my face. The best part is, they aren't abrasive. I always feel clean and refreshed after using these.
Disclaimer : This next section is going to be my actual, in depth 'Skin Care Routine'. I wanted to make the point that I am not a dermatologist and, this may not work for your skin because each person's skin varies in texture, sensitivity, acne patterns, etc.
I run warm water over my face for a few minutes. Doing this opens your pores and allows for more dirt, makeup, and gunk to escape - leaving you with less chance of getting a breakout.
I take one pump of Bioré Deep Pore Charcoal Cleanser and warm it up between my finger tips until it turns white-ish and frothy. From here, I run it over my face; mainly focusing on my nose and the sides of it and my cheeks. If you use this, make sure that you don't scrub it in too harshly lest you irritate your skin (charcoal is a natural exfoliater so pressing too hard may cause this to happen).
I wash this off with the warm water and pat my skin dry with a cotton T-shirt
I run warm water over my face again (excuse my strange routines).
Now, I take two pumps of Doterra's Veráge cleanser. This is one of the more expensive items in my routine however, it is made completely of naturally sourced oils like tea tree, peppermint, orange, basil, and more. This oils help break down the makeup/dirt further while also stripping the dead skin off your face. I will warm this up on my finger tips and apply evenly all over my face.
I wash this off with warm water and pat my face dry with a cotton T-shirt (this is the last time)
I take one pad from my container of Tucks Medicated Cooling Pads and run that slowly all over my face. Allow me to clear something us about these: Yes, they are marketed as a method of hemorrhage relief BUT: they are very good for your skin and are maybe on of the cheapest items that include a large amount of pure Witch Hazel. After using these, my skin glows.
I take a small pump of Lubriderm Advanced Therapy Lotion and run that evenly over my entire face. I use only a small amount of this because it is a deeply hydrating lotion and too much could make your face sticky or very oily.
It is important to understand that even if you introduce a new item that is going to be very good for you in the long run to your skin, you may react in a matter that may give you more breakouts for about a week. This is especially true for cleansers. This can be explained because when you use a very cleansing face wash, your skin tends to pull all of the gunk to the top layer of your skin very fast - causing breakouts. If your breakouts persist for more than a week or your acne looks more like a rash, stop using the product and contact your doctor as you may be allergic to some ingredient in the face wash.
Thanks for taking your time to read this today. I appreciate each view, like, and comment that I get and I will try to respond to most, if not all of them.
See ya later Theater Kids :)
