Apologies for the slight hiatus - I have been working on a piece for this blog but it is taking longer than normal.
If you are a Broadway consumer, chances are you have heard of 'The Prom'. If you haven't, listen to the soundtrack and sit in the corner and think about your life choices. Anywho..
I had the tremendous opportunity to see 'The Prom' with my Theater Arts Club buddies in New York a few weekends ago. We were lucky enough to get to see the original cast perform however, Gabi Campo was playing Emma, as opposed to Caitlin Kinnunen but! Her voice was so amazing and I was blown away by her performance. It was definitely slightly jarring to watch the musical after I had been listening to the soundtrack for weeks; I cried during the first scene (Changing Lives) because I had listened to that very scene with the same actors on the bus ride to New York and I was overcome with emotions to actually get to see it on stage. I was so moved I actually almost forgave the girl sitting in front of me for wearing a high bun to a Broadway show while sitting in the Mezzanine. I also had the joy of watching an entire family get angry and storm out of the theater once gay things started to happen in the third or forth scene - they were the one thing we laughed the most about on the bus ride home.
The show definitely had us all saying 'We're All Lesbians' and making fun of ourselves because we thought the choreographed bows for 'The Addams Family' was difficult, and then we watched theirs. The best moment of the show, I believe, was 'Unruly Heart' especially when all of the comments on Emma's video came to life. That harmony (you know the one) makes me tear up every time I listen to it. This song is so important to me now. Although it was written about loving someone of the same gender, you can really apply the lyrics to any situation in life when your heart pulls you one way but society disagrees. I left that show teary eyed but, I had a new hope in my heart for the life set before me: What is the point of living of you aren't living to the fullest?
This was a long winded way of me saying, "If 'The Prom' doesn't win every single Tony it is nominated for, I will fight every person on that judges board with my fists and sheer fury'.
Thank you for taking your time to read my insight on 'The Prom'! I appreciate any like, view, or comment I get and will try my hardest to reply to each and every one of them. Keep a look out on the feed - there are 3 posts in the works: Information about health during show season, My overall experience in New York this year (and why you should go), and an insight into my TAC's Theater arts gala (it's like a cast party, only fancier)
Honorable Mention for 'best moment' In 'The Prom': During Alyssa Greene, the line "Mom's convinced if you’re perfect, your father might come back", you could hear the entire audience do a half gasp/sigh/moan of pain and we all felt deep in our souls the heartbreak of that line. Thinking about it gives me chills.
